Les gisants du Brabant Wallon

First Edition

The recumbent is the image of choice for medieval funerary art. It is the central figure of a constellation whose iconographic symbolic language illustrates the beliefs and attitudes. While they are undergoing radical change in the Renaissance, the figure of lying still for over a century to represent the object of parental memory. The province of Brabant has a hundred tombstones lying in effigy. Although uneven in value, they still illustrate the creativity of artists and artisans in the country. Their heritage is rediscovered. This book draws up an inventory and present a reasoned comment, relayed by an extensive photographic documentation.
