Qu'y a-t-il de commun entre un ancien professeur de l'Université de Sao Paulo revenant sur son positionnement durant la dictature, un jeune employé de banque chilien dont l'action syndicale est influencée par sa conception du militantisme de la génération précédente, un couple français passant ses week-ends à reconstituer une bergerie mérovingienne et à en recréer les savoir-faire, ou encore des personnes âgées réunies sur une scène de théâtre pour raconter des fragments poignants de leur vie ?
À partir d'enquêtes qui offrent des observations de contexte socio-historique varié et des explorations par des méthodes ethnographiques aussi diverses que les entretiens, l'observation participante, l’analyse de matériaux comme le journal intime ou les séries télévisées, c’est avant tout le lien entre le rapport au passé et l’horizon d’action des acteurs sociaux qui est posé ici.
Les contributions de ce numéro ont par ailleurs en commun une approche de la mémoire collective plus proche de la mémoire collectée. Les auteurs font le choix d'une analyse partant, en grande partie, de la subjectivité. La personne est par là placée au centre du dispositif d'étude de la société.
Enfin, on pourra relever que six des sept recherches développées prennent pied sur le continent américain : au Canada, aux États-Unis, au Mexique, en Colombie, au Brésil et au Chili.
