Belgium Abroad

Reconciling Domestic Governance with International Commitments

January 2026 marked a turbulent start to the new year. In the span of a single month, several major international developments unfolded in rapid succession, underscoring the growing volatility of global affairs. Against this backdrop, UCLouvain's Center for International Crisis and Conflict Studies convened diplomats, military officials, and scholars to reflect on a central topic: reconciling domestic governance with international commitments. The authors explore four key dimensions of Belgium’s external action: the Defense policy under the Arizona government; the role of humanitarian aid in a geopolitical
context; implementing gender norms in practice; assessing foreign representation in a federal state. Blending first-hand experience with academic analysis, this book offers a broad overview of Belgium abroad in 2026.
