The South Baffin census of 1913-1914 by Archibald Lang Fleming

The South Baffin census of 1913-1914 by Archibald Lang Fleming

In January 1913, during his second stay at Kimmirut, the missionary Archibald Lang Fleming, whom the Inuit called Ilataaqauq ("having many new relatives") and who was to become the first Anglican bishop of the Arctic, travels by dogteam along the south coast of Baffin Island between Kimmirut (Lake Harbour) and Kinngait (Cape Dorset), with two Inuit: his guide and assistant Pallu and a young boy he calls Yarley. Stopping at each camp on his way, he enumerates the people who live there, identifying the households to which they belong. Fleming also notes down the name and gender of each individual, as well as the approximate age of younger people. In early 1914, he completes his census by adding the camps that lie in a northeastern direction, between Kimmirut and the Blacklead Island (Uummannarjuaq) whaling station. In this document, after a short introductory text on the history and format of the census we present it in extenso, transcribed in standard orthography to the extent that we were able to decipher Fleming's spelling. The document ends with a section expounding the more general context of Fleming’s sojourn in Kimmirut at the beginning of the 20th century, as well as the missionary’s attitude toward the Inuit and their culture.
