Inscriptions grecques et latines de la Syrie

L'Auranitide
First Edition

In the middle of Jabal al-ʿArab, the highest permanent villages of the ancient Auranitis have yielded nearly 300 Greek (and a few Latin) inscriptions, which often reflect the same themes as those found in the other parts of the Ḥawrān. Read More

Initially divided between the Roman province of Syria in the north (at least as far as Ṣalāḥ and Rushaydah) and the territory of Bostra and the province of Arabia in the south (since its creation in 106 AD), the plateau was reunified when the Severan dynasty moved the border of Arabia north of the ancient Trachon (Lajā). The uniqueness of this area primarily stems from
the importance of the sanctuary of Mushannaf, where Athena played a major role alongside a local Zeus; this place of worship attracted pilgrims from all over the region and beyond. Furthermore, the presence of soldiers and veterans, as well as Arab auxiliaries, reminds us that we are on the edge of the steppe frontier that stretches eastward below the mountain range, as confirmed by camps, forts, and towers attested to by epigraphy and archaeology. Finally, alongside the sedentary villagers, it is also worth noting the presence of nomads from the ḥarra, who left not only numerous Safaitic inscriptions
near the villages, but also a few Greek texts on the rocks of the steppe.
